Yes! Ufology is a Subject Academics Should be Researching!
Meet Matthew Hayes: A PhD that dared to complete his Doctorate with a Dissertation on the History of UFOs in Canada.
I’m an educator, researcher, and filmmaker.
Dr. Hayes teaches philosophy, politics, English, and ethics at Northern Lakes College. He received his PhD from Trent University and held a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Western Ontario. He studies conspiracy theories, pseudoscience, “cranks,” UFOs and the supernatural, and Cold War espionage.
My doctoral research was featured on CBC Radio’s Ideas, which became the subject of my book Search for the Unknown.

“Principals, Techniques and Logic for Investigating UFOs”

If you missed this one, you truly missed a memorable night! Our guest speaker, Shane Hurd — Phoenix MUFON Field Investigator Trainer, Assistant State Director, and member of MUFON’s Experiencer Resource Team (ERT) — delivered a captivating and thought-provoking presentation that had everyone leaning forward in their seats.
Shane pulled back the curtain on how MUFON operates at both the state and local levels, offering an inside look at what it really means to be a Field Investigator. He blended professionalism with passion, sparking curiosity and laughter along the way — the evening flew by before anyone realized it!
His journey into ufology began with the legendary “Phoenix Lights” event of March 13, 1997 — still one of the most widely witnessed UFO cases in history. Hearing firsthand how that night inspired him to seek the truth brought a personal and powerful touch to his talk.
One of the evening’s highlights was Shane’s clear explanation of the difference between UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) and UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena). While UFOs refer strictly to objects in flight, UAPs broaden the scope to include everything from mysterious orbs and spirals to atmospheric anomalies and unconventional aircraft.
Shane also reminded us that critical thinking is more important than ever — especially in a world where advanced CGI and AI can produce extremely convincing hoaxes. He encouraged attendees to turn curiosity into action by getting involved with MUFON investigations and by reaching out (even anonymously) to their local chapter for guidance.
We’re incredibly grateful to Shane for stepping in on short notice and sharing his expertise with such enthusiasm and heart.

Shane’s Bio:
Shane Hurd has spent his nearly 25 year government career in the fields of Civil Engineering, Geographic Information Systems, Information Technologies, and is a graduate of Arizona State University’s Certified Public Manager program. As a member of the space race generation, he has been a lifelong space and science nerd, and sci-fi geek. It was the Phoenix Lights Incident in his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona that sparked his interest in UFO’s.
Since that time, he has studied the subject intently and ultimately in 2015 joined MUFON, then became a MUFON Field Investigator in 2017. He is now a Star Team member, a field investigator trainer, a member of the Experiencer Resource Team and is the Assistant State Director for Arizona MUFON.
In June of 2020 he published his first book entitled “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena: A beginners guide to researching UFOs”. He has appeared on “Ancient Aliens”, “History’s Greatest Mysteries with Laurence Fishburne”, other television and radio programs, and various podcasts. He is a proud grandpa, musician, a car guy, amateur astronomer, horse owner, and enjoys a good bourbon now and then.

Dan’s Bio:
Dan conceived the Hollywood Disclosure Alliance in 2023, and serves as its Chairman. He Co-Founded the HDA, based in Los Angeles, CA, along with noted UAP / ET Disclosure Advocate Stephen Bassett.
Dan’s two newest books are My Paranormal Life: Supernatural Stories From A Hollywood Insider, and FIVE; both of which were released in Summer 2024.
Born and raised near Asbury Park, New Jersey, Dan Harary is best known for his 40-plus years of work in Hollywood as an Entertainment Industry Publicist, and as Owner (since 1996) of the Asbury PR Agency in Beverly Hills, California.
Dan has personally experienced three UFO sightings. One near Edwards Air Force Base in 1996. Another in 2008, at the ECETI Ranch in Washington State, at the base of Mt. Adams. But most significantly, Dan had a dramatic UFO sighting in his hometown in 1970, where he shared the experience with his father, an Electronics Engineer / Physicist for the U.S. Army. He has been interviewed about that sighting by media outlets around the world — the story also became a feature article in the June 2023 edition of the MUFON JOURNAL.
After his father’s death in 2017, Dan recalled that encounter for the first time in 47 years, discovered the nature of his late father’s top secret work with radar systems, missiles, and military drone technologies, and was inspired to write his second book, After They Came.

Bios:
Fred Pallesen: Leadership and Outreach
Fred Pallesen—serves as the CEO of Project Hessdalen. He is responsible for coordinating research efforts, managing public outreach, and maintaining the project’s infrastructure. His contact information is publicly listed on the official website, indicating his openness to collaboration and transparency.
Pallesen has been instrumental in:
- Expanding the project’s digital presence, including its YouTube channel and Discord community.
- Promoting citizen science and inviting volunteers to contribute equipment and expertise.
- Overseeing the development of the Anomaly Detection System housed in the Blue Box.
Rainer Haseitl: Technical Expertise and Field Research
Rainer Haseitl is a prominent technical contributor to Project Hessdalen. While less publicly profiled than Pallesen, Haseitl is known for his involvement in field investigations and instrumentation. According to a flyer from Northland MUFON, both Pallesen and Haseitl have presented findings and updates on the Hessdalen Lights, emphasizing their commitment to rigorous data collection and analysis.
Haseitl’s contributions likely include:
- Engineering support for sensor arrays and data logging systems.
- Participation in field expeditions and anomaly documentation.
- Collaboration with international researchers and UFO study groups.
Project Hessdalen remains one of the few long-term scientific efforts to study unexplained aerial phenomena. The work of Pallesen and Haseitl has helped maintain the project’s credibility and visibility in both academic and public circles. Their efforts have inspired similar initiatives in other regions and contributed to the broader discourse on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs).

Debbie’s Bio:
Debbie Ziegelmeyer joined MUFON in 2000 and became a Field Investigator shorty after. She is currently a MUFON Star Team Investigator, Missouri State Director, on the MUFON Business Board of Directors, a MUFON MARRS team member, co-founder of the MUFON Dive Team, and the MUFON Functional Director of Underwater Research and Recovery. She has over 1200 completed UFO investigations, with over 875 of them being MUFON sighting reports.
Debbie has been a Roswell 1947 crash investigator for over 25 years and is a member of Ted Phillips’s T.P.R.C. Team. In 2017 she was awarded both the “Roswell Incident Excellence Award” by the Roswell Daily Record, and MUFON “Field Investigator of the Year”. Debbie’s book “The Alien Colonization of Earth’s Waterways” which was released in September 2021, is A Reference Guide to UFO-USO Water Related Activity.
She and her husband Wayne currently live in southeast Missouri and own and manage Largo Properties, LLC. and Custom RV and Boat Storage. Debbie is also a PADI Scuba Instructor and owner of Missouri Scuba Diving, LLC.

Logan’s Bio:
Logan’s career bridges military intelligence, scientific skepticism, and public engagement with the unknown. Originally from the UK, Lenval “Logan” served for 20 years in the US Airforce and 15 years as a government contractor. He has had a long interest in and studied unexplained phenomena and scientific inquiry. He’s an active member of MUFON, Scientific Coalition for UAO Studies, and National Capital Area Skeptics. Became a member of the U.S. government’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) Task Force, focusing on analyzing and identifying unexplained aerial objects. He Investigated reports of unidentified craft near nuclear sites and military installations and advocated for transparency and better data collection in the field of UAPs.
He is the CEO of Phenom LLC, which developed the Phenom app—a platform for reporting UAP and paranormal sightings. The app aims to democratize data collection and reduce stigma around unexplained phenomena.

Camille’s Bio:
Camille James Harman, MFA, is an actress and UFO experiencer with such credits as: the Oscar-winning film Vice, in the role of Mary Matalin, as well as Shameless, the Lifetime movie A Daughter’s Deceit and numerous films, web series, commercials and music videos. Harman was Executive Producer on the award-winning short film Toro de Oro. In 1992, she won the Storer Boone Award in New Orleans for Best Supporting Actress in The Playboy of the Western World. In 2022 she won three international Best Actress Awards for the short film Tigerlily.
In late 1995, soon after moving to LA from New Orleans, Harman had her first UFO sighting. Abduction experiences followed. She underwent hypnosis sessions with Barbara Lamb and Yvonne Smith, which revealed medical experiences with presumed aliens and human military as well as positive light beings of pure love. She also wrote for UFO magazine from 2000-2004, which allowed her to meet many legendary UFO researchers.

Ryan S. Wood, born in Maryland and raised in Southern California, is a distinguished UFOlogist and researcher, following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Robert M. Wood, who was involved in UFO physics and anti-gravity research at Douglas Aircraft. Ryan graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1978, with degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science, later building a career in marketing, sales engineering, and corporate management across multiple industries, including aerospace, energy conservation, and fusion technology. He is currently the CEO of Electric Fusion Systems Inc.
Wood is widely regarded as a leading expert on the Majestic-12 documents and the 1941 Cape Girardeau UFO crash. He has lectured extensively, taught college courses on the subject, and organized seven international UFO crash retrieval symposia 2003-2009. He has been featured in numerous television programs, including on the History Channel and ABC News, and has been a guest on popular radio shows like Coast to Coast AM. Additionally, Wood manages the website MajesticDocuments.com and co-produced The Secret, a television documentary that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, exploring the authenticity of the Majestic-12 documents.
He has authored several books on the topic, including Majic Eyes Only: Earth’s Encounters with Extraterrestrial Technology, The AI UFOlogist and a soon to be published work UFOs: Who Knows? He is a key figure in UFO research conferences like MUFON and CITD. Through his investigative efforts, Wood has become a leading voice in unraveling the truth behind historical UFO cases, advocating for greater transparency and the release of classified information related to UFOs. Mike’s Bio:
Researcher Mike Ricksecker is the author of the award-winning Travels Through Time, Amazon best-sellers A Walk In The Shadows and Alaska’s Mysterious Triangle, as well as several historic paranormal books. He has appeared on multiple television shows and programs, including History Channel’s Ancient Aliens and The UnXplained, Travel Channel’s The Alaska Triangle, Discovery+’s Fright Club, Animal Planet’s The Haunted, multiple series on Gaia TV, and more. Mike is the producer and director of the docu-series, The Shadow Dimension, available on several streaming platforms, and produces additional full-length content on ancient wisdom, lost civilizations, UFOs, and the supernatural on his extensive YouTube channel.
